Thank you for your interest in Alder Bay Housing Co-operative.
We are composed of individuals of various backgrounds who have in common a strong sense of community. In the spirit of co-op living, we require our members to actively commit their time and energy to the operation of the Co-op by participating in committees, work parties and attending general meetings.
If this kind of intentional community is what you are looking for, your first step in becoming a member of our housing co-operative is to fill out the following Expression of Interest form. Please keep in mind that we have many families wanting to become co-op members, but only a few vacancies. Often prospective members wait several years. It is to your advantage to make your Expression of Interest as complete as possible. Expressions of Interest that are not complete will not be processed.
The strength of our community rests on the talents of our member families. In prospective members, we look for:
- An understanding of co-operative living or co-operative projects
- Evidence of participation in volunteer and/or community projects
- Stability and a desire to make Alder Bay Co-op your home for some time to come
- The ability and desire to contribute and work toward the maintenance and success of Alder Bay Co-op
- Evidence of housing need
- We may consider leadership experience, skills and abilities
In addition to the above, new member families must match their family size to the unit size and have the financial means to pay full monthly housing charges and make a one-time Share Purchase.
A 2-bedroom unit can have a minimum of 2 and a maximum of 4 family members, and a 3-bedroom unit can have a minimum of 3 and a maximum of 6.
Housing charges are set annually as part of determining the Co-op’s operating budget. Currently, prospective members must have an annual household income of at least $56,880 for a 2-bedroom, and $64,320 for a 3-bedroom unit.
Currently, Alder Bay Housing Cooperative is only accepting applications for 2- and 3-bedroom units.
Once you submit the application, you will receive an email to confirm receipt by our Membership Committee or management company. The Membership Committee then reviews the Expression of Interest applications. If your family configuration and abilities coincide with the needs of the Co-op, you may be invited to meet with us for an interview. This may lead to placement on the Wait List. There is not a predictable time frame for this process because it is dependent on the availability of units.
